Challenge: This computer parts facility produced electronic components and devices for the hospital industry, including intricate circuit board, cable assemblies and hospital-specific computers. In a meeting with this potential client, one of their engineering managers expressed frustration with reliability of a particular turret press used in the manufacturing process of data storage card holders. It was described as "clunky", prone to jams and difficult to use, resulting in slower production times.
Harvey Vogel Manufacturing Co. Solution: A follow up conversation with the engineering manager resulted in a hand drawn sketch of a possible redesign. Within twenty four hours of the meeting, a CAD/CAM drawing of the new design emphasizing higher tolerances was delivered to the potential client. A working agreement and P.O. was signed and within two weeks, Harvey Vogel Manufacturing Co. began production on the new turret press.
Results/Impact: * $450,000 estimated net savings per year * Eliminated "jams" and production slowdowns * On-time delivery increased to nearly 100% * Set up times reduced by 35%
