Harvey Vogel Manufacturing Co. Processes

Harvey Vogel Manufacturing Co. has been in business for over 65 years and is an industry leader in the manufacturing of complex metal stamping and assemblies for small independently owned manufacturers as several fortune 500 companies. There are 3 distinct manufacturing processes available when choosing to manufacture a metal fabricated part. Although all 3 processes can virtually make the same part, economically the 3 are vastly different.

 Fabrication

This process involves, turrets, lasers & press brakes. This involves little to no tooling, and is the most time consuming. The piece price is at its highest level with this process but the tooling, involves little to no monetary investment. Volumes for this process should be less than 1,000 pieces annually.

 Stage Tooling - Short Run

The second process and the main focus of this video is stage tooling or short run tooling. This is what we would consider the hidden secret in our industry but has been available for several decades. This process involves a minimum tooling investment that will be in the high hundreds to very low thousands of dollars. Some times these tools are referred to as pancake dies due to the thin nature of the plates. Also, stage tooling will provide for a more tightly toleranced part than true fabrication. The main advantage to the stage tooled process is the cost savings it can provide. Generally, the piece part cost can be reduced by as much as 50% from the fabricated process. The ideal annual volumes for this process are between 1,000 and 30,000 pieces.

 Progressive Tooling
The final process in this video is progressive tooling and although the tooling investment is generally in the tens of thousands of dollars, the piece part price is at its lowest level. This process will allow for the tightest tolerances of the 3 processes as all of the operations are encapsulated in one complete die set so for each revolution of the punch press you get a completed part. The annual volumes for this process are above 30,000 pieces annually.
